My Friend Mamud from The Gambia

The Short Story of Mamud

My friend Mamud is one of the most humble, kind, courteous and devout people I have ever met.  We met about two years ago on Skout, the chat app, about the time Covid began.  He was one of the first people I had met there and he was a catalyst for propelling me onto this journey.  The way he talked about The Gambia and his life sparked something inside of me that now burns as a steady flame – the desire to learn about the world.

I remember Mamud’s answer when I first asked him what The Gambia is known for. He said The Gambia is the “smiling coast of Africa”.  This is because Gambians are known for always smiling, especially at tourists. As time has passed on, I have realized that every Gambian I have encountered says the same thing. It is a matter of pride for Gambians that they are welcoming people.

Mamud is married and has a handsome son named Katim. Katim is the most adorable little man in all of The Gambia. He lives in a multi-family complex, where his neighbors are literally his family. For work, he owns a taxi and provides transit services in his town of Old Yundum. His native language is Wolof and he also speaks English and French.

A Faithful Friend

Mamud is Muslim and holds his faith dear to his heart. We occasionally discuss Islam and he tries to help me understand the truth of Islam and its practices. While we both have different views on faith, the one thing that remains true between us is that we accept each other’s belief systems without prejudice. We both have different ideas on religion and we accept our differences, which makes our friendship highly valuable.

Mamud is a dear friend of mine and he will remain my friend for many years to come. I adore his son, Katim, so much that I am now his “auntie”. I am honored to be given this title to such a little angel. There is a lot to be said for building family outside of blood relatives, and when you can build family with people who cross international borders, well… it is the gift of being human.

Until next time…

Peace and love,

Jessica <3
